当只做不玩,聪明的孩子也变傻瓜

Introduction:

Nowadays, with the popularity of technology devices, children are getting more exposed to screens and gadgets. The convenience brought by technology indeed facilitates learning and entertainment for children. However, when the emphasis on playing overweighs that of doing, children's cognitive development could be negatively affected. The concern is that even the smartest children could become \"dumb\" when only playing and not doing, what is called the \"smartness trap\".

The reasons why “smart” children are susceptible to the smartness trap:

The \"smartness trap\" could happen to children of all intelligence levels, yet it may occur more often among those perceived to be smarter. One of the reasons is that smart children are used to effortless learning and can easily grasp knowledge without much hard work. However, they may lack perseverance and patience to handle complex problems or tasks. When faced with a challenging task, they tend to choose the easier way out, which is to play games on screens. The attraction towards short-term pleasure instead of long-term goals if left unchecked, could result in deteriorating performance in various aspects of children’s lives, e.g. academic results, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

The ways to prevent the smartness trap from happening:

To prevent the smartness trap, parents and caregivers could adopt the following measures. Firstly, it’s necessary to limit screen time and urge children to engage in outdoor activities or hands-on projects. These could promote children's physical coordination, social interaction, and creativity. Secondly, parents should cultivate their children's effort spirit rather than solely emphasizing results. Encouraging children to manage challenging tasks would require them to handle obstacles that would enhance their problem-solving capability as well as foster resilience. Thirdly, create a family culture that inspires open communication and emotional expression. Children who can articulate their needs and share their feelings with their family are often more confident and resilient when tackling life's challenges.

In conclusion, balance between playing and doing is the key to children's healthy growth and development. Although technology is a powerful tool that enhances children's learning, it should not replace the effectiveness of hands-on activities and outdoor exploration. Parents and caregivers could help children avoid the smartness trap by empowering children to manage difficulties, self-manage time, and communicate their needs and feelings more effectively. Only then can children maximize their brilliance and potential to become happy, fulfilled individuals with a balanced life.
